The summer transfer window is heating up, and a familiar name is once again dominating the rumour mill: Aurelien Tchouameni. Sources close to the situation suggest a truly stunning development could be on the cards, with Liverpool reportedly given the green light to make a move for the highly-rated Real Madrid midfielder. This comes despite the Reds’ impressive league triumph, where Ryan Gravenberch shone in the defensive midfield role.
Last year, the Merseyside club were linked with Martin Zubimendi, and there was a genuine possibility they would look to reinforce their No. 6 options this summer. A combative presence in the centre of the park remains a priority for the Reds, a void perhaps highlighted by their prior interest in Moises Caicedo before his eventual switch to Chelsea. Given Liverpool’s long-standing admiration for Tchouameni, a deal that once seemed improbable could now finally materialise.
It’s no secret that Liverpool held a significant interest in Tchouameni before he ultimately opted for Real Madrid in 2022. He signed a six-year deal with the Spanish giants, a move that Spanish publication Marca reported to be worth a substantial £68.3 million, with an additional £17 million in add-ons. Even now, the Frenchman stands as Madrid’s fifth-most expensive acquisition ever.
However, the landscape at the Santiago Bernabéu has shifted. With new manager Xabi Alonso now at the helm, and an abundance of talent in midfield including Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, and even the recently acquired Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tchouameni finds himself among a strong cohort of candidates who could be moved on. Spanish outlet Fichajes has corroborated this sentiment, echoing reports from AS via Sports Mole, indicating that Tchouameni could indeed be offered to the Reds for a more palatable fee of just £59 million.
The 25-year-old is highly regarded, currently ranked at No. 3 in FourFourTwo’s comprehensive list of the world’s best defensive midfielders. His versatility is also a significant asset; he has spent a considerable amount of time deployed at centre-back under Carlo Ancelotti, suggesting he could be a valuable squad member at Anfield across various positions.
However, a caveat emerges. FourFourTwo understands that for Arne Slot, the new manager, defensive midfield is not currently the paramount concern. Instead, securing deals for a left-back and a centre-forward are understood to be higher on the priority list in the coming weeks. Furthermore, the previous interest in Zubimendi was reportedly more about a specific personality rather than simply a profile, suggesting that Liverpool may not even be actively seeking another defensive midfielder at all.
Despite the intriguing developments, Tchouameni is still expected to travel to the United States with Real Madrid as part of their Club World Cup squad. His situation may, however, evolve further as the summer progresses. According to Transfermarkt, the Frenchman’s current market value stands at a respectable €75 million. The coming weeks will undoubtedly provide greater clarity on this evolving transfer saga, as Liverpool weigh their options and Real Madrid continue to reshape their squad under new leadership.
