Alexander Isak would appear to be Liverpool’s priority heading into the final days of the summer transfer window.

The Swede, 25, has burned his bridges at Newcastle - issuing a statement on Tuesday confirming trust has broken down.

Liverpool offered £110m - a British transfer record - for the striker a few weeks ago but that was rejected out of hand by Eddie Howe’s side.

Given the standoff between Isak and his employers, Liverpool would strike once again if they receive any encouragement that an approach would be worthwhile.

Could Liverpool move on from Isak?

Of course certain dominoes need to fall.

Not only would Newcastle need to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, the Geordies would ALSO need to satisfy their requirements of adding another high-profile No9.

The North East side have already missed out on several striker signings this summer - Hugo Ekitike included - and there are no guarantees that they will be successful in a forward hunt.

And while Liverpool have not yet made an approach for any Isak alternatives, an opportunity has cropped up that could be too tempting to refuse.

Alvarez has Atletico Madrid regrets

Julian Alvarez, 25, moved to Atletico Madrid from Manchester City last summer in a deal that could reach €95m.

The Argentine World Cup winner top-scored for Diego Simeone’s side - notching 29 goals in all competitions - but Los Colchoneros ended the season without an honour to their name.

Alvarez is a long-term Liverpool target with the club even making an attempt to sign him in 2024.

City turned down the Reds’ attempts to sign the serial winner as Liverpool wouldn’t included Luis Diaz in the deal. But now a chance has arisen to sign Alvarez - who has a contract with Atletico until 2030.

According to El Chiringuito, the striker is ALREADY regretting his decision to move to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Simeone can't handle Alvarez

“Julián Alvarez’s entourage believes he made a mistake by signing with Cholo’s team,” journalist Matias Palacios revealed as per Get Spanish Football News.

“He has never been given the place he feels he deserves. He is resigned and hurt because last season he scored almost 30 goals, but they placed him on the left wing to chase full-backs or substituted him at half-time."

It’s claimed that a source within Alvarez’s camp said:

“You can’t blame Simeone because he doesn’t know how to handle a star of world football. He’s not used to it, so it’s our fault for taking him there. We made a mistake to go and play for Simeone’s team.”

Could Liverpool entice Alvarez?

Alvarez scored a sensational free-kick in Atletico’s opening day LaLiga defeat against Espanyol last weekend. With Simeone chasing the game, the forward was hauled off and forced to watch the closing stages from the bench.
