Liverpool Pay Tribute to Diogo Jota After Portugal Star’s Tragic Death | OneFootball

Liverpool have described Diogo Jota's death as an “unimaginable loss” after the Portugal international was involved in a fatal car accident in Spain.

Jota and his brother, 26-year-old André Silva, were tragically involved in a car accident during the early hours of Thursday morning near the Spanish city of Zamora, with the Portuguese Football Federation among the first to pay tribute.

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” a club statement read.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, André.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Liverpool paid a total of £45 million ($58 million at the time) to sign Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2020. Just two days before his passing, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi admitted his regret towards accepting the Reds’ bid during an appearance on the Business of Sport podcast.

Jota quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Anfield, proving to be an elite finisher and reliable goalscorer during his five seasons with the club.

In total, Jota netted 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, chiming in with a further 26 assists as he contributed to some of the most significant memories in club history.

On top of the 2024–25 Premier League title, Jota also played a hand in the 2021–22 FA Cup triumph and two Carabao Cup wins in 2021–22 and 2023–24.
