With every passing week, it feels like Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool is truly coming to an end.
The Reds trio of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are in the final years of their deals at Anfield, and all three could leave the club for nothing.
Liverpool will undergo a massive rebuilding in the summer, and replacing the three of them won’t be easy.
Salah has scored 32 goals and provided 22 assists in all competitions this season, and finding a proper replacement for him is in itself a herculean task.
Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak can play in Salah’s position, but it will be too risky to put hopes on them without signing a proper replacement.
Back in January, Jamie Carragher suggested that Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo could be a perfect replacement for the Egyptian if he moves on.
The 25-year-old forward has been linked with a move to Liverpool following an impressive season in the Premier League, during which he scored 15 goals and provided five assists. His numbers are bound to increase with better players around.
The Cameroon international is one of the standout players at Brentford under Thomas Frank, and he was hailed for his “sublime” finish against AFC Bournemouth this season.
Carragher said on Sky Sports: “You feel with Brentford signings or Brighton because they’re ahead of the game, everyone is always a little bit, ‘what do they know that we missed?’
“I think of my old club with the situation regarding Mohamed Salah, a left-footed player on the right side, who can fit the bill? He is someone whose name that always crops up because of his ability and the club he is at.”
It would be foolish to think that Slot can find a direct like-for-like replacement for a player of Salah’s quality.
However, the Reds can stick with the current system and bring in players who can address the problems the club have faced this season.
The lack of pace upfront is glaring. Mbuemo plays in Salah’s position—he’s fast, skilful, and has an eye for goal. He also has good technique and Premier League experience.
It is difficult to predict how Liverpool will approach the summer window at the moment, as other important players like Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez could also be offloaded if they receive good offers.
