As Liverpool gear up for their Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley, all eyes are on how Arne Slot is managing his squad in the wake of pre-season challenges. With expectations riding high after a triumphant Premier League-winning campaign in 2024-25, Slot is staying grounded, focused on getting key players back to peak condition without rushing their return.
Among the players under the spotlight is Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentina international missed the back end of last season due to injury, and his absence was felt in midfield. Though his return to full pre-season training was delayed, there are now promising signs of his recovery.
Mac Allister made a gradual return to match action last week with a 25-minute appearance against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan. That was followed by just under an hour of game time in the friendly against Athletic Club.
“He will be in the squad [on Sunday],” said Slot at his pre-match press conference ahead of the curtain-raiser at Wembley.
“He was out for two months I think, or longer because we didn’t play him in the last four games of the season. He trained with us since a week now, played 30 minutes, 45 minutes.
“So that’s not a situation where you would start a player [and] play him for 90 minutes. Starting is possible but definitely not for 90 minutes.”
Slot’s clarity makes it obvious that the midfielder is being handled with care. While fans may be eager to see Mac Allister back in full flow, the long-term view is being prioritised.
Defensively, Joe Gomez is also working his way back. The versatile England international played a crucial role during last season’s title-winning run, and his absence could leave a noticeable gap if prolonged.
Slot offered a brief but positive update on Gomez’s condition.
“Unfortunately he has a minor injury at the moment but he will be back with the team very soon.”

There is no sense of panic from the manager, just a steady approach to reintegrating a key part of Liverpool’s defensive unit. Gomez’s ability to slot into multiple roles across the backline remains a significant asset.
Arne Slot has already earned widespread respect for delivering silverware in his first season, but his calm and calculated management style may prove just as valuable. With Liverpool preparing for another demanding campaign on multiple fronts, ensuring players like Mac Allister and Gomez are fully fit is essential for the long haul.
This early part of the season is not just about lifting trophies but building momentum with the right balance of intensity and patience. Slot appears to be striking that balance expertly.
Supporters will be encouraged by the way Slot is handling fitness concerns. The return of Alexis Mac Allister to the squad is a welcome boost, while Joe Gomez’s quick recovery suggests Liverpool won’t be short of defensive options for long.
As Liverpool prepare to defend their title, the blend of returning talent and disciplined squad management looks like a strong foundation for another successful season.
