With half of January beyond us, Bayern Munich are yet to find a breakthrough in contract talks with the three key players- Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, and Jamal Musiala. Leroy Sane has also entered the final six months of his contract, but a decision over his future will come later in the season.
Kimmich and Davies can talk with interested clubs in January to negotiate a free transfer for the summer. It does look like Bayern are moving in the right direction with Davies as his agent was in Munich last week for further negotiations. However, the contract talks with Kimmich have hit an impasse.
The German midfielder was set to make a decision during the winter break. However, things are moving at the snail’s space. According to Bild’s Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (via iMiaSanMia), Kimmich is also speaking to other clubs. Liverpool have touched base with the German midfielder to understand the possibility of a free transfer. Apart from Liverpool, other big English clubs have also explored moves for the German midfielder. Real Madrid are also an appealing destination for Kimmich.
FC Barcelona have also shown interest in Kimmich, but a move looks unlikely due to their precarious financial situation. Manchester City are also reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation of the German midfielder. Paris Saint-Germain will also be in the race to sign Kimmich as they tried to sign him last summer.
Kimmich is playing the waiting game to understand Bayern’s long-term project. He wants Bayern to have a strong squad that can consistently win Champions League titles. Kimmich also wants to see if Die Roten can convince Davies and Musiala to sign new deals Things are not completely off the track for Bayern regarding Kimmich, but there is significant work to do regarding his contract extension.
Former Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn has urged the club to set a deadline for a contract renewal with Joshua Kimmich. While talking to SportBild, Kahn said that Bayern needed to show a position of strength by asking Kimmich to agree on a deal in a fixed period. If the deadline passes, Die Roten should withdraw the offer and start working on finding a replacement.
Vincent Kompany considers Kimmich an important player in the squad. The German midfielder has played every minute of the Bundesliga this season. If Bayern give the right assurances to Kimmich, agreement over a new deal is still possible. As things stand, Kimmich is in a position of strength. Die Roten need to make the best offer to convince him to spend the rest of his peak in Bavaria. The club chiefs have already endorsed Kimmich to lead the team in the future. A strong sporting project will certainly convince Kimmich to stay in Munich.
