The victim is reportedly a 51-year-old Irish man who had arrived at the airport shortly before midnight, flying from Manchester.

Liverpool are set to take on AC Milan at the San Siro in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night and the man reportedly had his match ticket in his pocket when the incident occurred.

The report states that the man was hit by an SUV in the third lane of the road, and it is believed he may have been misled by his GPS and did not realise he was about to cross a motorway.

It is reported he was trying to reach a local hotel, where he was booked to stay the night, and managed to cross three of the road lanes before he was struck.

It is unclear why the man was attempting to cross the road.

Liverpool Football Club are yet to comment on the tragic passing and full details surrounding the incident have not yet been released.

Liverpool’s game against AC Milan is still expected to go ahead as scheduled and will kick off at 8 p.m. BST.
