Liverpool have spent all year trying to get a deal done for Alexander Isak. It’s proven to be the most difficult transfer of the lot, though.

Far easier was a deal for Florian Wirtz - someone with half of Europe hoping to sign him. Liverpool don’t have any competition for Isak and yet they’re struggling.

Newcastle United are the reason for that, of course. They haven’t wanted to lose their star player and only Isak’s actions have sparked a transfer into life.

Isak refuses to play for the Magpies, insisting they’ve broken promises to him. It puts the club in an incredibly difficult position and one in which they pretty much have to sell.

Liverpool did try to make that happen weeks ago, offering over £110m for Isak. Newcastle rejected it, with the Reds feeling a deal wasn’t possible unless the selling club found a replacement.

Liverpool closer to Alexander Isak deal

Thursday's bombshell update saw Newcastle agree a deal with Stuttgart for Nick Woltemade. They're paying a lot of money for the German but they've finally found themselves a striker after much effort.

And the Telegraph follows that story with news that 'Alexander Isak’s proposed move to Liverpool has moved closer in the past 24 hours'. They claim sources that suggest an offer will go in this weekend.

The Woltemade deal is unquestionably the trigger here - it's exactly what we were all waiting for. Newcastle didn't just find a new striker but someone who roughly fits Isak's profile.
