Liverpool Transfers: Journalist Makes Bold Claim About Reds’ Striker Search

Arne Slot has already captured the signatures of Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez this summer in a £200m+ spending spree. All four players arrived in training for the first time on Tuesday and are expected to feature in Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday.

But Liverpool’s summer business is far from done and a centre-forward could be next on Slot’s list.

According to reliable transfer journalist Nicolo Schira, Liverpool could be closing in on a major addition to their front line.

“Liverpool are currently leading the race to try to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The striker has given his availability for a contract until 2030. Opened talks,” said Schira on X.

Frankfurt are expected to be seeking around £80million for Ekitike this summer, but there’s a belief that a deal could be struck around the £70million mark.

The news comes as Liverpool remain locked in discussions with Napoli over a move for Darwin Nunez. The Reds have reportedly rejected a £47.5million bid for the Uruguayan but are unlikely to receive a bid in the region of the £70million that they rejected from Saudi Arabia in January.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool aren’t alone in the race to sign Ekitike.

“Hugo Ekitike keeps attracting interest from the Premier League with Newcastle keen on the striker.”

“More Premier League clubs remain also informed on the situation, after Liverpool and Chelsea calls in June,” said Romano.

Of course some supporters will be keen to see if Newcastle United’s interest in the Frenchman could be linked with a potential move from Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak.

Although it would take a bid worth upwards of £120million to begin negotiations to sign the Swedish forward, a move hasn’t yet been ruled out by people close to the club.

There’s no doubt that a move for Ekitike is much more likely than a move for Isak, but it remains certain that Liverpool will sign a striker this summer. Arsenal are closing in on Viktor Gyokeres, Chelsea have signed Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, and Galatasaray are leading the race to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli.

That essentially leaves both Isak and Ekitike as the two names strongly linked with a move to Anfield, so both moves could be one to keep an eye on.
