Liverpool have agreed a club record €136.3 million transfer fee for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The two clubs had reportedly agreed on a deal worth up to €150m, which would have made him the most expensive signing in British football history.

However, the Reds will pay a €117.5m fee with a further €18.8m in add-ons for the 22-year-old.

The attacking midfielder had already agreed personal terms with Liverpool last month, and he is now expected to sign a five-year contract at Anfield.

Wirtz is one of the most gifted talents in European football. He bagged 18 goals and 20 assists in 49 appearances in 2023/24.

He maintained his excellent standards this season, making 31 goal contributions in 45 matches.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City were keen to sign the German international, but Liverpool have won the race to secure his services.

Wirtz will become the Reds’ second signing this summer after Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival at the Merseyside club.

Further new signings are expected at Liverpool as manager Arne Slot strives to shape the squad to his own taste.
