Germany’s 25-year unbeaten run against Portugal came to an end on Wednesday night and it was a familiar surname that haunted them once again.
Back at Euro 2000, Sérgio Conceição famously bagged a hat-trick in Portugal’s 3-0 win that knocked Germany out in the group stage. Fast forward to Wednesday night in Munich, and his son Francisco Conceição stepped into the spotlight.
The 22-year-old winger came off the bench in the 58th minute of the Nations League semi-final and just five minutes later, he levelled the score at 1-1 with a cracking strike after a blistering run down the right.
Roberto Martinez's side didn’t stop there. Another five minutes on, Cristiano Ronaldo struck what proved to be the winner, tapping into an empty net after Nuno Mendes squared the ball across the box.
It was Ronaldo’s first-ever win over Germany, having come up short in all five previous meetings.
Making his 220th appearance for the national team, Ronaldo once again showed his class. The goal was his 137th for Portugal and the 937th of his career - further stretching both of his already record-breaking tallies.
The result not only ended Portugal’s winless streak against Die Mannschaft but also secured their place in the UEFA Nations League final on 8 June, where they’ll face either Spain or France.
