The extraordinary news broke last week that Leeds United are considering replacing Daniel Farke amid his poor record in the Premier League.

On Easter Monday, the German head-coach helped the Whites secure a return to the Premier League at the second time of asking as their victory against Stoke City, combined with results elsewhere, gave them an unassailable point tally.

Yet, just two days later, Mike Keegan reported that the Elland Road outfit have reservations about Farke's previous stints in the top flight and are considering the possibility of sacking him. This has now been advanced with Leeds chairman, Paraag Marathe, flying over from San Francisco to begin talks with the 48-year-old about his future.

While to many this may seem like a bizarre decision, it is undeniable that Farke has struggled in the Premier League in the past. During his tenure at Norwich City, he oversaw 49 top flight matches, securing just six wins - a win rate of only 12%. This record is simply not sufficient for survival, and given the challenges faced by recently promoted teams, it wouldn't be surprising to see Leeds take such a decision.

So far, only a handful of names have been mentioned as potential replacements, but former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder, and current Como boss, Cesc Fàbregas, has certainly caught the eye of the Whites hierarchy.

To gain an insight into what Leeds fans might want as a replacement, should Farke be sacked, Football League World spoke to their resident Whites pundit, Kris Smith, who highlighted some potential candidates that the Elland Road hierarchy could consider.

"The issue I have replacing Farke right now is that, coming into the summer window once these two games are over, time is of the essence, and if the 49ers are dead set on replacing him, it has to be as soon as possible," Smith told FLW. "They have to have someone lined up – you can't be dawdling around.

"If the club are looking to prize someone from a different club, the standout name in terms of someone everyone knows would be Carlos Corberan at Valencia – it would be hugely ambitious. I just doubt whether he would leave, given he is local to Valencia and has only been in the job for half a season.

"His pragmatic style, solidity without the ball, and ability to change the gameplan from game to game would be perfect for survival in the Premier League.

"Away from that, Liam Rosenior is doing quite well at Strasbourg – overachieving in Ligue 1. There is potential for him to be a good manager to consider.

"Looking at the pool of managers who are currently out of work, it doesn't give you many outstanding candidates. The two that have recently secured Premier League survival with promoted teams are Steve Cooper, who was sacked from Leicester City and they are probably regretting that decision, and Gary O'Neil – who did really well with Bournemouth, keeping them up. But Bournemouth did sack him, and they are even better now with Andoni Iraola.

"They are two managers who have done it before, but other than that, you are going to have to look abroad for names worth mentioning."

Leeds have a huge decision to make on Daniel Farke's future

Having secured promotion from the Championship, Farke would usually be afforded a chance to prove himself in the Premier League, but that for now is out of his hands.

Arguably, his previous two campaigns were with struggling Norwich City teams, and this Leeds side could be seen as more top-flight-ready. Of course, they also have the potential to spend heavily to improve across the pitch, and an influx of new talent could help secure their status next season.

As Smith pointed out, there are other options available, but the likes of Corberan and Rosenior are untested in the Premier League, while O'Neil and Cooper have had their struggles as recently as this season.

A firm decision, one way or the other, is needed, and if they decide to keep Farke in the role, they must ensure they back him in the summer window.
