Leeds United legend Jon Newsome believes that Brenden Aaronson is “very much a Jesse Marsch kind of player”, who prefers frantic action but needs to learn to calm down as at the moment his approach ‘just doesn’t work’.

Aaronson was employed in the usual number ten role by manager Daniel Farke in the match against Watford on Tuesday and though he played a key role in setting up Daniel James’ second goal, Newsome felt that his frantic approach prevented Leeds from scoring another.

The 54-year-old feels that Aaronson is frantic by nature and his performance in the 4-0 win was nothing unusual.

Given the 24-year-old’s upbringing under former Leeds manager Marsch, Newsome feels that he has gone on to be moulded by the 51-year-old and needs to be taught calmness and patience.

He thinks that the approach the American has at the moment does not work.

“Having watched Brendan Aaronson for a lot of football matches now, especially this season and when he was with Jesse Marsch, he is very much a Jesse Marsch kind of player”, Newsome said post match on BBC Radio Leeds.

“Pile in, 100 miles an hour, everything is a bit frantic – I don’t think that is the way you play football.

“Because when you get into those positions, he is still frantic.

“That’s when he needs to calm down, that is when he needs to take a breather and commit the defender to slide in, it is an easy thing to do if you have got the confidence and understanding to do it.

“Not sure he has because he has been brought up in a different way in a different style of football and it is all blood and thunder and just pile in.

“For me, it just doesn’t work.”

Despite the flaws Newsome has found in Aaronson’s game, he has been a key member of Farke’s set-up this season, playing in all 32 league games and making ten goal contributions.
