Leeds United sent scouts to watch Plymouth Argyle's Bali Mumba over the weekend.
Leeds United had scouts watching Plymouth’s Bali Mumba on Saturday as Argyle pulled off an FA Cup shock at Brentford.
The versatile 23-year-old is in his third year at Home Park, having initially joined Plymouth on loan from Norwich before the move was made permanent in the summer of 2023.
And, he has played a key role in their rise, helping the side to promotion to the Championship and then safety in the second tier, whilst he remains a regular in the XI this season.
Capable of playing down either flank, Mumba has impressed for Plymouth with his energy and drive, whilst he also has quality on the ball.
Such form appears to have caught the eye, as Leeds United News has claimed that the Whites sent a scout to watch Mumba against the Bees, with the Championship leaders said to be ‘considering’ a January offer for the player.
With Mumba under contract until the summer of 2027, Argyle will be under no pressure to cash in this month, and they will no doubt drive a hard bargain as they fight to stay in the second tier.
This may not be the sort of signing that excites Leeds fans too much, as they are a big club who have ambitions to establish themselves back in the Premier League.
But, Mumba is a player who can make that step up, even if there are areas of his game that he needs to improve.
The former Norwich City man has the energy and intensity to suit Daniel Farke’s style of play, and if he was brought in as a full-back, he has the attacking instincts that the German would want.
With doubts about Junior Firpo’s future, it makes sense that Leeds are looking for a left-back, and Mumba’s performance against Brentford won’t have done him any harm. He was a key part of a defensive unit that kept the Londoners very quiet, which included stopping the excellent Bryan Mbuemo when he was introduced in the second half.
Plus, at 23, Mumba is a player who could become a mainstay of the Leeds side in the years to come if this move did happen, so he ticks a lot of boxes for the recruitment team, and having players who can play in multiple positions is always a positive.
