Arne Slot’s men fell behind early, with Christian Pulisic threading a lovely ball through to Rafael Leão in the 10th minute - the Portuguese forward made no mistake, slotting past Alisson to give the Italians the lead.
The Reds drew level just before the half-hour mark when Dominik Szoboszlai picked up the ball on the left side of the area and bent a lovely strike into the net.
After the break, Leão continued to cause problems, this time setting up Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the 51st minute after a strong run down the left. The English midfielder tucked it away to restore Milan’s lead.
Their advantage was extended shortly after the hour, as Noah Okafor got on the end of a right-wing cross and added a third.
The Premier League champions managed to pull one back in stoppage time through Cody Gakpo, who rose well to head in. But any hopes of a late comeback were dashed when a mix-up between Kostas Tsimikas and new signing Giorgi Mamardashvili gifted Okafor a second goal, wrapping up the win for Milan.
