England captain Leah Williamson is set to miss the start of Arsenal’s Women’s Super League campaign after sustaining a knee injury in the Euro 2025 final.

The 28-year-old returned home with swelling on her right knee and following this, a small surgery was needed.

The news will come as a blow to Renee Slegers’ side, who won the UEFA Women’s Champions League in May for the second time in their history, 17 years after their first victory.

Williamson, who has led her country to European victory twice, ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament in April 2023 on the same knee that this recent surgery was on, but the injuries are not directly linked.

That injury saw the Lioness sidelined throughout the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, in which England were runners-up to Spain.

The Gunners last won the WSL in the 2018/19 season and will be desperate to get their hands on the title that Chelsea has won every season since.

Arsenal begin their WSL campaign against newly-promoted London City Lionesses on 6 September.
