Lazio president Claudio Lotito has given a strong hint that they may have ended their pursuit of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been strongly linked to Lazio in recent weeks, with the Serie A outfit mentioned as his preferred next transfer destination.

It was stated that Lazio tabled a bid worth around €20 million with the promise of a 40-50% sell-on clause for the Carrington academy graduate but it was swiftly rejected by United, who are holding out for a €35 million fee.

There is an expectation that Lazio, who are keen on making a big summer signing to appease their fans, will lodge another offer for Greenwood, who is also believed to be of interest to other teams such as Valencia, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the 22-year-old wants his future sorted in the next few days.

United chiefs are also working hard to secure him a permanent exit.

However, the possibility of Greenwood joining Lazio has now been thrust into doubt following Lotito’s latest remarks.

Lotito confirmed that his side came close to adding Greenwood to their ranks last summer but a move fell through. The 22-year-old went on to complete a loan switch to La Liga’s Getafe, where he enjoyed a fantastic 2023/24 season on his way to winning the club’s Player of the Season award.

The Englishman scored ten goals and registered six assists for Getafe in the 36 appearances he made across all competitions.

Lotito told the media (via Fabrizio Romano), “The deal to sign Mason Greenwood was close last year but then it collapsed at the final stages.”

“Now I’ve one more name on the list.”

The 67-year-old added, “I can’t share the name but he’s ten times better than Greenwood.”

Greenwood’s United contract runs until 2025 but the Red Devils have an option to trigger a one-year extension to tie him down until 2026.
