There were lots of positives to take from Arsenal’s match against Fulham on Tuesday, with the Gunners securing all three points in large part thanks to Bukayo Saka’s long-awaited return from injury.
But there was also plenty of bad news, starting before the game had even kicked off. After seven games back in the squad post-knee surgery, Ben White was absent again in midweek, with Arteta confirming it was another knee issue.
“He had a little niggle two days ago,” Arteta said. “Yesterday we tried, he wasn’t feeling right, so we decided not to put him in the squad today.”

There was more to come, as Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off in the 16th minute. The Telegraph report that it appeared to be a serious hamstring injury for the centre-back.
Jurrien Timber was also forced to come off, though he did at least make it to the 77th minute.
“They are two players in this team that never want to come off,” Arteta began. “Gabi felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know how big that is and with Jurrien (Timber) as well, he was already struggling very early in the game.
“Jurrien was the knee. He managed to continue and at some point he couldn’t, so, that’s the downside to it.
“We’ll be assessing them tomorrow and understand better how we are with those two.”

With Gabriel pulling up during a sprint, it seems unlikely his injury will turn out to be minor hamstring tightness. A strain is the more probable outcome now, which would certainly rule him out of the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals and probably the second as well.
As for Timber, Arsenal fans will be keeping their fingers crossed. Given the lack of certainty around White’s situation and Takehiro Tomiyasu already out for the season, the team really need Timber to be passed fit.
