Wycombe Wanderers' move for Rangers defender Leon King has fallen through.
Wycombe Wanderers deal for Rangers defender Leon King has fallen through after it was thought he would be joining the League One side.
The Chairboys endured a difficult end to the previous campaign, as they fell short in the race for automatic promotion before being edged out in the play-off semi-final against Charlton Athletic over two legs.
That ended the promotion dream for Mike Dodds and the team, but they will look to go again this season, and they have wasted little time in refreshing the squad, with Dan Casey, Taylor Allen and Bradley Fink among the arrivals already.
And, it had appeared Wycombe were set to make another new signing, as the Daily Mail has revealed that King was set to join from Rangers.
They explained that the two clubs have agreed an undisclosed fee for the Scotland U21 international, with an expectation that it would be finalised this week.
However, in a surprising twist, journalist Pete O'Rourke stated that the transfer 'has stalled' and 'appears to have fallen through'. It's unclear whether that was down to the player failing to agree terms with Wycombe, or if another club had shown a late interest in the centre-back.
King would've appeared to be a good signing for a League One club, as he came through the ranks at Ibrox, and he has gone on to make over 40 appearances for the Glasgow outfit, which includes featuring in the Champions League.
Despite starting Rangers’ friendly draw with Club Brugge over the weekend under Russell Martin, the reality is that King is way down the pecking order when everyone is available, particularly with the Scottish side expected to sign Nasser Djiga from Wolves, and they’re also pushing to bring in Conor Coady.
Therefore, King knows he isn’t going to get regular game time, so this is the right move for the sake of his career.
Even though he does have talent, there are areas of his game that need to improve, and he will hope to do that away from the spotlight of Rangers, and Dodds is a coach that has a track record for developing youngsters, so it's a shame in that sense that this move won't be happening.
