Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal has broken a Champions League record after starting in their group stage clash with Porto tonight.

The winger has become the youngest player to start a Champions League match at the ripe old age of 16 years and 83 days.

Yamal eclipses the previous record held by Celestine Babayaro who achieved it playing for Anderlecht in 1994 at 16 years and 86 days.

It is another huge step in what has been a whirlwind few months for Yamal who became Barça’s youngest ever player in April 2023 after making his debut against Real Betis at the age of 15 years and nine months old.

He made his first start for the club in the 2-0 win over Càdiz in August, becoming the club’s youngest ever starter in the process, before earning his first ever call-up for Spain’s senior side where he became their youngest ever player and goalscorer in the 7-1 Euro 2024 qualifier victory over Georgia.

Not a bad start to what looks likely to be a long and prestigious career.
