Mikel Arteta insists his team will start scoring goals from open play again following a goalless draw with Everton.

The draw means Arsenal have not scored a goal from open play in the last three league games.

Liverpool dropping points against Fulham also means it is a missed opportunity to make up ground on the league leaders and Arteta admits his side lacked an attacking spark.

“At the end you need a spark and you need to be precise,” he said. “We had the chances and this could have been two or three-nil, and [then] nobody is talking about it.

“The reality is 0-0 and they are not going to talk about all the incredible things the team did in the game. When I see my team track back it is unbelievable. Every three days, 70 metres. Very difficult to ask them something else because they want it.

“When you do what we’ve done against them today, you have to win the game. At the end this is football – the hardest thing is to do what we have to do in those last 20-25 meters.

“Credit to them as well, the way they defended, the way they blocked shots, the saves that Pickford made, the shape that they defend with. Honestly it’s difficult to ask something else from the team.

“Okay, individually can we do things a bit better and with a little bit more quality and deliver that magic moment when it’s necessary? Yes. But that is not easy.”

When it was put to Arteta that his side have not scored from open play in three league games, he said: “In the Premier League. We scored three from open play three days ago.

“It won’t continue, we will score goals. If we have the chances like we had today again, I am sure we will score. The problem is that we didn’t.”
