Match Day #19 wasn't the best for the LA Galaxy. Not only was Wednesday night's loss against the Colorado Rapids their 8th shutout loss, but it was also the third time they lost 2-0 to an MLS Western Conference team.
The Los Angeles Galaxy could not stop Djordje Mihailovic from scoring for the eighth time this year. Calvin Harris added his second goal of the season minutes later.
After scoring three goals against St. Louis City in their last game, the LA Galaxy failed to carry over their offensive prowess. They locked down their first and only win of the season in a 2-0 shutout agiainst Real Salt Lake prior that contest, as well.
Both teams took the field in a 4-2-3-1 formation. That's not uncommon for the defending champions. However, the Starting XI was not the best lineup for the Los Angeles Galaxy,
Forward Christian Ramirez has not started in over a month. Instead, Matheus Nascimento was inserted up top in head coach Greg Vanney's starting lineup.
Not only did Ramirez come in a sub, but he replaced struggling midfielder Edwin Cerrillo. The 24-year-old missed the LA Galaxy's last game due to suspension.
The league punished Cerrillo for his excessive fouls. Apparently, he didn't learn his lesson, as he was issued a yellow card before being subbed for Ramirez.
"Felt like we got off to a decent start. Ball was moving quickly. But then when they started to up their pressure and I think they raised a little bit of the intensity, they weren't going to let us get so comfortable, then the game start to pick up a little bit and I gelt like our movement was a little too slow, everything our reactions in transition, everything then we were a step, two behind."Greg Vanney, Head Coach of the LA Galaxy
Furthermore, the LA Galaxy controlled the ball an overwhelming 69% of the game. That's more than twice as much as the Colorado Rapids. Yet, not one of the Galaxy's five shots (13 attempts) found the back of the net.
Instead, the Rapids launched eight shots and four were on target. Half of those went in and led to Colorado's first win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in over a year.
"I think we're at a club that it's always going to push to be at the top. We're in a situation right now where we're chasing from the bottom, but never hopeless. We have players that can make a difference and we just haven't clicked in the times and crucial moments in the game we need to. There is always going to be hope and we're always going to chase the next team in front of us. As each game goes by, each point is more and more crucial and we know that. We just need to step up."Edwin Cerrillo, LA Galaxy midfielder
Starting keeper Novak Micovic saved two shots but allowed two, as well. The LA Galaxy had five corner kicks whereas the Colorado Rapids had none.
The six-time MLS Cup champions had a chance to go unbeaten in their previous two games. The Rapids entered Wednesday night losers of three in a row including a pair of consecutive shutouts.
This has been the narrative for the struggling LA Galaxy. Next up, they travel north to San Jose to face their nemesis, the Earthquakes. That game will be played on Saturday as the Los Angeles Galaxy will have two days off prior to this match.
