The former Borussia Dortmund star has arguably been the best player for the Los Angeles Galaxy all season. Saturday evening, Marco Reus added to that claim.
The two winningest franchises in Major League Soccer squared off at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, in a rematch of both the 1996 and 1999 MLS Cup Finals. Since the LA Galaxy fell short in both of those championship games, the victory was just a small measure of revenge.
It also marked the first time in the 2025 MLS regular season that the Los Angeles Galaxy has won back-to-back games this season. They improve to 3-2-1 in their past six contests.
For starters, D.C. United's leading scorer Christian Benteke didn't even take the field until the 57th minute. At that point, the Los Angeles Galaxy were already up 2-0.
Diego Fagundez scored within the first eight minutes of the second half. The LA Galaxy played a complete game aside from Gabriel Pirani's strike inside the 77th minute of play.
Winners of two in a row now, the defending MLS Cup champions held a 15.5% possession advantage. The LA Galaxy also shot moe effectively. They had five of their 14 shot attempts be on target whereas D.C. United had just three of their 11 attempts be on target.
It was a physical game as the Galaxy's opponent committed 14 fouls and were issued five yellow cards. Starting goalie Novak Micovic enjoyed being on the field for the team's third win of the season. Prior to this season, he never got to experience that feat.
Saturday's game was the first time in almost a month that D.C. United had scored as they were on the receiving end of three straight shutouts. The LA Galaxy have had eight of their own on the year.
"I think the spirits are high. As I said to you, for a little while now since coming off the eastern coast, the East Conference road swing, by and large, if you just look at the performances, we have been somewhat pleased, too pleased, with a lot of our performances, disappointed with the way we have given away results in certain situations or points. "Greg Vanney, head coach of the LA Galaxy
Next up for the six-time MLS Cup winners is Austin FC. This will be a quick turnaround for the Los Angeles Galaxy as they play at home on Wednesday evening.
The last time these two teams met happened to result in one of those shutouts for the LA Galaxy. Austin FC won 1-0. Hopefully, the home team can win in this game, too.
