Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has extended his contract with the club until 2025. He will continue his successful journey at the Tyneside club for two more years.
Trippier’s signing signalled the beginning of a new regime for Newcastle as he was the first signing of the Public Investment Fund era. The Saudi Arabian company took charge of the club in October 2021 and signed the right-back in January 2022 from Atletico Madrid.
The 32-year-old has been phenomenal for the Magpies. He netted two goals in the six Premier League appearances he made for them last season.
This season, Trippier has taken things up a notch. He has only scored one goal, but it was a memorable one, arrowing a free-kick during their 3-3 draw against Manchester City at St. James’ Park in August.
He has created 16 big chances in the league, accruing four assists. Only Kevin De Bruyne has recorded more big chances (20).
Also, Trippier has helped his side earn their PL record of 15 games unbeaten in the top flight.
Following the extension, Trippier said (via the club’s website): “I’m absolutely delighted that I’ve extended my contract here. I’ve got a lot of thank yous to make to the manager, owners, fans and my teammates.
“When I first arrived here, they made me feel so welcome and I want to help the club achieve great things. It’s a positive moment for us players in the club and there’s nowhere I’d rather be.”
Newcastle United Head Coach, Eddie Howe, added: “It’s a fitting reward for the season he’s had. He’s been outstanding both on and off the pitch, showing real leadership at a difficult moment when he first arrived, and now he’s excelled in a team that’s doing well.
“I can’t praise him enough for everything he’s given the club.”
Trippier has helped Newcastle record 16 clean sheets across all competitions this season, including 12 in the league. The Bury-born defender has registered six assists.
Trippier will continue his journey with Newcastle, hoping to help establish them as the next European powerhouse. They look destined for a UEFA Champions League place for the first time since 2003.
In 2003, Trippier was still in Manchester City’s youth system, grafting, and learning. He made his senior team debut for Barnsley on loan from the Cityzens. He would also join Burnley, initially on loan, before signing for them in 2012.
Trippier spent three years under Sean Dyche with the Clarets before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. There, he established himself as one of the best full-backs around.
Trippier is an England international with 40 caps. He was in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November/December last year and was part of the Three Lions squad that reached the semifinal in 2018.
