Kevin De Bruyne to Liverpool COULD still happen

Kevin De Bruyne to Liverpool - how likely is that? We think it’s a deal that could still happen, if the Reds are patient.

It’s a massive summer for Liverpool as they look to re-tool a Premier League-winning team. That’s no easy feat - and what a statement that is to the rest of the league.

But it’s not yet clear who might arrive at Anfield. The Reds are linked with an incredible number of players, as always, but we’re also unsure what Arne Slot wants.

After all, the Dutchman simply took on Jurgen Klopp’s squad and made it work for him. It’s not a team built for his own style of play and truth be told, we don’t actually know what that squad would look like.

Does Slot want a no.9? A false 9? What does he want the full-backs doing? We’ll find out this summer and it could see some truly incredible signings.

One of those lurking in the background is Kevin De Bruyne, who leaves Manchester City this summer with the end of his contract. We immediately wrote that we’d love him at Anfield, though that certainly doesn’t mean the decision-makers in Red see things that way.

Liverpool have been linked fairly consistently in Italy, however. The latest from Sport Mediaset claims Napoli, the frontrunners, are nervous about the Reds jumping into the race.

Fabrizio Romano, though, is among those saying Liverpool have not made any sort of offer and aren’t in the race. But we think it may be too quick to write this one off.

Kevin De Bruyne to Liverpool?

It feels incredibly unlikely to us that Liverpool and De Bruyne would enter any sort of discussions before the end of his City contract. He’s still got a game to play for them, after all, and it was incredibly unlikely before the FA Cup final.

Liverpool and City are rivals of sorts, after all. De Bruyne isn’t going to make any kind of move to upset the fans before saying goodbye.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, for instance, hasn’t even announced he’s off to Real Madrid despite everyone knowing that’s the case. With that in mind, De Bruyne certainly isn’t discussing terms with Liverpool.

The player himself has been fairly open about potentially staying in England, though. He’s mentioned his family and remaining fairly local to where he is now would be a major selling point.

As would joining the club he supported as a boy - one who is also competing at the very top. Honestly, there’s so much here that makes sense, especially as the Reds appear to want a new playmaker if their pursuit of Florian Wirtz is anything to go by.

Now, De Bruyne makes less sense in that he’s well past 30 and on his way down. But for a couple of years? We still think Liverpool could make magic happen with him.

They were never going to entertain a formal approach before the season is out, though. In fact, legally they’re not allowed to do so as a fellow English club.

Once the campaign is done, though? That’s when we’ll really listen to reports about Liverpool’s interest. That’s when something might actually happen.

So don’t write this one off just yet. There’s still plenty of time for something to happen.
