Juventus face identity crisis ahead of new season

Juventus head into the upcoming Serie A season facing significant uncertainty around both their tactical direction and squad composition, with club observers and Italian pundits in agreement that it is too early to label them as favourites for the Scudetto, according to Tutto Juve and an editorial by Ivan Zazzaroni in Corriere dello Sport.

Christian Brocchi, speaking to Radio Sportiva as cited by Tutto Juve, noted, “It’s difficult to name favourites at this stage because we need to understand how Milan and Juventus will approach the new season.” Brocchi highlighted that while Napoli have kept their coach and maintain a consistent mentality, Juventus’ setup under returning manager Massimiliano Allegri remains a major question mark. “We have to see how Allegri manages to restore values at Milan and bring about a change in the expectations for Juventus,” he added, underlining the fluid competitive landscape.

Ivan Zazzaroni, in his column for Corriere dello Sport referenced by Tutto Juve, suggests Juventus are in the midst of yet another internal overhaul, describing the situation as “the umpteenth French revolution” that is currently holding the club back. He characterizes the market activity in Italy as shaped by financial constraints, with Juventus navigating delicate squad restructuring and operational adjustments.

Transfer dealings add to the sense of flux. Juventus continue to chase attacking reinforcements, notably holding active talks for Jadon Sancho and exploring options for Randal Kolo Muani, but negotiations remain complex. The status of several current players—including Dusan Vlahovic and Douglas Luiz—remains unresolved, with both potential departures and further arrivals possible. According to Tutto Juve, the situation up front needs to be resolved before Allegri can settle on a coherent tactical framework.

Club leadership is also adapting, with figures such as François Modesto taking on new roles to assist coach Igor Tudor, who is reportedly searching for a deep-lying midfielder to orchestrate play—a role Valentin Rongier of Marseille has been linked with. The midfield and fullback positions, in particular, are flagged as areas needing definition, with ongoing talks for targets and possible sales as part of the process.

From a financial perspective, Juventus are balancing transfer plans with off-field obligations, including settlement activities involving Elkann and the Agnelli family, further shaping their approach in the market.

In sum, Juventus approach pre-season with their transfer strategy, coaching direction, and squad status all in a state of evolution. As Brocchi put it, a clearer view of their real ambitions and chances will emerge only as Allegri and the club crystalize their approach in the coming weeks.
