Juventus are looking to reshape their midfield this summer, and Sandro Tonali is back in their sights, according to an insightful report by Gazzetta dello Sport. As Juve continue to assess their financial options ahead of a possible Champions League return, Tonali’s name remains at the top of the wishlist.
Gazzetta reports: “The first target in the middle of the field remains Sandro Tonali, for whom there have already been contacts on the sidelines of the Kelly deal with Newcastle in recent months.” These behind-the-scenes talks suggest a longer-term interest from the Turin giants, though a move for Tonali is still described as “an ambitious deal, but not a foregone conclusion.”
Despite the complexities, Juventus seem intent on exploring ways to bring the Italian international back to Serie A—less than a year after he joined Newcastle United in a high-profile move.

As is often the case in Italy, Juventus’s transfer ambitions are closely tied to European qualification. Gazzetta writes: “The Champions League influences everything, especially the budget for summer negotiations.” If Max Allegri’s side secure a top-four finish, their war chest will receive a significant boost—enabling them to be more aggressive in their pursuit of top talent like Tonali.
There’s also mention of other midfield alternatives, should a deal for Tonali fail to materialise. Benfica’s Florentino Luís is reportedly “back on the radar” along with Atalanta’s Ederson. The report explains: “In addition to Ederson (Atalanta), Florentino is back on the Bianconeri radar: the 25-year-old from Benfica has been viewed on several occasions.”
From Newcastle’s perspective, the idea of losing Tonali just one season after his arrival feels improbable. He was signed for a reported £55 million and, despite off-field controversy and a lengthy suspension, the club sees him as a vital long-term asset. It’s difficult to envision the Magpies agreeing to any kind of exit unless a truly staggering offer is tabled.
Nevertheless, Gazzetta’s linking of Douglas Luiz as a potential makeweight hints at creative negotiations. Whether that’s wishful thinking from Juventus or a legitimate avenue remains unclear, but there’s no doubt Tonali’s name will continue to attract attention on the continent.

Tonali’s stock remains high in his homeland. His blend of tactical intelligence, physicality, and leadership makes him a desirable asset for any Serie A powerhouse seeking midfield dominance. Juventus, in particular, are in need of a long-term midfield anchor to replace ageing legs and bring structure to their transitional setup.
It’s telling that Gazzetta labels Tonali the “first target” despite interest in others. That designation signifies not just a preference, but intent—a sign that Juventus are seriously considering making a bold move to bring one of Italy’s brightest midfielders home.
As Newcastle United fans, we’ll naturally view this development with raised eyebrows. It’s flattering, in a way—Tonali hasn’t even completed a full season at St James’ Park, yet already Italy’s most storied club is circling. But if Juventus think they can swoop in now, they’ll be sorely mistaken.
Tonali may have endured a rocky start in England, exacerbated by his gambling ban, but fans have seen glimpses of the tenacity and class that made him a marquee signing. He’s only 23, and Eddie Howe will no doubt have plans to integrate him fully once his suspension ends.
This move also smacks of opportunism from Juventus—an attempt to test the waters while Tonali is sidelined and perhaps feeling nostalgic for home. But let’s be clear: Newcastle’s ambitions are growing, and selling Tonali now would undermine that project.
Unless a ridiculous nine-figure bid arrives—and even then—it’s hard to see Toon owners entertaining this. As far as we’re concerned, Tonali will be donning black and white stripes… but not the ones in Turin.
