Leeds United have been warned to avoid signing Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson over fears of a poor injury record.

However, his injury-hit time on Tyneside has left Football League World’s Leeds United pundit concerned over the viability of a move to Elland Road.

Leeds will need new strikers if they reach Premier League

Leeds United hope to return to the Premier League at the second time of asking, after missing out on a Championship exit via the play-offs last season thanks to a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Wembley.

Daniel Farke’s side are currently locked in a four-way race for the two automatic spots in the Championship, facing one of their direct rivals for promotion, Sunderland, this evening.

After such a strong showing this season, Leeds fans are starting to grow confident about promotion.

When asked by FLW about the links to Callum Wilson, Leeds United fan pundit Joe Blackburn agreed that his side would need further firepower in the top flight, but shared his doubts about whether the Newcastle player was the right choice.

He said: “Leeds are obviously going to need a striker or two if they are promoted in the summer, given that Patrick Bamford probably needs to leave, as he can’t stay fit for us.

“Mateo Joseph probably could do with a Championship loan, given that we all know how talented he is but he’s not quite there yet in terms of showing it consistently.

“Callum Wilson on a free would be a smart move on paper.

“Obviously he would cost no money other than wages, but the issue that you’ve got is he’s totally injury-prone at the moment, just like Bamford is.”

Parallels drawn between current Leeds striker Patrick Bamford and target Callum Wilson

Blackburn went on to explain exactly why Leeds should swerve Wilson, pointing towards the striker’s hamstring issues at St James’ Park.

FLW’s Leeds pundit drew comparisons between Wilson and Bamford, who has endured injury hell since Leeds returned to the Championship.

“It would be a really odd move to get rid of an injury nightmare in Patrick Bamford, and replace him with another in Callum Wilson,” continued Blackburn.

“He’s obviously got the quality to be a top-half Premier League striker, he’s shown that with 18 goals with Newcastle a couple of seasons ago.

“But the issue is that he’s not fit enough, often enough to be able to show that consistently.

“For a team like Leeds, that would be in this situation going into the Premier League, you’d need players that would be able to hit the ground running and bring consistent results.

“Wilson wouldn’t be able to do that.

“He’s probably going to be on bigger wages as well, and is it worth Leeds putting that much investment behind someone who won’t be able to deliver results?

“I don’t think so – he is one to avoid.”
