Highlights

  • Sunderland had numerous chances and more shots than Coventry, but Ba's miss proved costly as Coventry took the lead shortly after.
  • Jude Bellingham watched his younger brother, Jobe, play for Sunderland, but it was a tough game for both of them in terms of goal-scoring opportunities.
  • Despite the loss, Michael Beale can build the team around Sunderland's young players, including Jobe Bellingham, who has been a regular contributor this season.

Sunderland were beaten 3-0 by Coventry City at the Stadium of Light in Michael Beale's first game in charge, but things could have been very different had the Black Cats taken their early chances.

Jude Bellingham was in attendance to watch his younger brother, and Beale started Jobe, which was an enforced change to the Sunderland line-up, replacing the unwell Alex Pritchard.

There was little for Jude or Jobe Bellingham to savour in terms of first-half action in front of goal, but Abdoullah Ba should have put the home side in front, inexplicably blazing over from close range after Brad Collins parried Jack Clarke's powerful shot into his path.

Beale then watched on as his new side fell behind to a scrappy goal from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto on the stroke of half-time. However, the Sky Blues were forced to soak up relentless pressure after the break before extending their lead through Callum O'Hare.

Substitute Kasey Palmer then sealed the points for Coventry, as Beale's side missed their chance to move back into the play-off places. Coventry's victory lifted them a place to 15th in the table, with Sunderland slipping to ninth, three points outside the top six.

Jobe played the full 90 minutes on his return to the side, after recently notching the winner against Leeds, but was unable to contribute in front of goal on this occasion, even with Sunderland having a huge number of chances during the game.

Sunderland had more shots and higher quality chances than Coventry throughout the game, having 21 shots to Coventry's 10, with an xG of 2.6 to 1.8, according to FBref.

However, the flashpoint was Ba's miss, which came with the score level at 0-0. It could have been a pivotal moment in turning the game in Sunderland's favour, but proved costly after Sakamoto put Coventry ahead shortly after.

It was a tough watch for the Real Madrid star, and as the ITV commentator alludes to, it is perhaps a chance he himself would have taken given his current streak in front of goal.

Jobe and Jude Bellingham

Jude has been in magnificent form for Real Madrid, scoring 17 goals and assisting a further five in 21 appearances for the Spanish giants.

Jobe himself has been a regular for Sunderland this term and is developing well, as the junior of the two. He turned 18 in September but has been utilised more consistently for his new side over Birmingham City.

The Sunderland midfielder has started 21 times this term, and played 22 games in total in the Championship, registering four goals in that time.

Beale has worked well with younger players in previous roles as a coach and can build the side around their new signing to some extent. His stint in charge has got off to the worst possible start, but he will take the positives from the number of chances created in his first game in charge.
