The DFB have announced that Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt has been called up to replace Angelo Stiller in the Germany squad for the Nations League finals.
Stiller will not be available for the finals due to an ankle ligament injury. The same injury had made the midfielder a doubt for the DFB-Pokal on Saturday against Arminia Bielefeld, but Stiller was fit enough for the final, where he put in a man-of-the-match worthy performance and played 87 minutes before being substituted for Niklas Nartey.
Burkardt will replace the Stiller. The Mainz striker was originally omitted from the 26-man squad despite a strong season as the 05ers achieved qualification for the Conference League. The 24-year-old was a part of Germany’s previous squad in the March international break.
In the Nations League finals, Germany will play Portugal in the semi-finals next Wednesday at the Allianz Arena in Munich, before potentially facing the winner of France vs Spain in the final, in the same venue, later that week.
