Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Joao Pedro from Brighton in a deal worth £60 million.
The 23-year-old is the Blues’ fourth signing of the summer, following Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr.
He joins Enzo Maresca’s side from Brighton after spending two years with the Seagulls, scoring 30 goals in 70 appearances.
“Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history,” Pedro said in an interview with Chelsea. “They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now. So I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing – win.
“I grew up watching the Premier League, and Chelsea were a club that won trophies. So, when you join Chelsea, you can only think one thing: to win trophies.
“Every tournament, you have to think, ‘I play for Chelsea. You need to win titles’. That is what I think and that is my ambition.”
The Brazilian forward reveals that he spoke to current and former Chelsea players prior to making the move.
He revealed: “I was talking with Andrey (Santos) on Instagram. I asked about the guys, about the club, and he said good things about the team. So it’s good to join.
“When you join a club and you know one of the players, it makes it easier for sure.”
The attacker continued: “I’m close a little bit to David Luiz. I spoke to him, not about Chelsea, but about my career and how I could develop better. He helped me.”
The 23-year-old scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 27 Premier League matches last season.
Describing himself, he said: “I think I’m very technical. I love to score. And when I was young I played in midfield as well so I can give a pass to my teammates. Quality, technical player, let’s say I’m this kind of player.”
Chelsea are currently playing in the FIFA Club World Cup and Pedro has already joined up with Maresca’s squad in the United States. He will be eligible to make his debut in their next game, which is a quarter-final tie against Palmeiras.
The forward said: “It’s good to play against a team from your country. I know some of the players from Palmeiras.
“I think it will be a great game. Both teams want to go through, so let’s see what happens.”
