Rangers have announced that Patrick Stewart has been appointed as their new Chief Executive Officer, with the former Manchester United chief replacing James Bisgrove, who left for Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah in May. It was reported earlier this month that the Scottish Premiership club had made significant progress in their search for a permanent new chief executive, and Stewart is set to take up the role on December 16 – a day after Rangers face Celtic in the League Cup final.
Veteran broadcaster Jim White has now taken to X (formerly Twitter) to share what he has been told about the new CEO.
The five-month search of Rangers for a new CEO has finally come to an end, and they will be glad they got it done before their Annual General Meeting later this year, with shareholders expecting the 21 days’ notice of the AGM.
St Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie had appeared set to be named new Rangers CEO at a point, but the move fell through, with chairman John Bennett initially filling the role before stepping down on health grounds.
Having spent 18 years at Man United and recently working as their interim CEO, Stewart brings much-needed experience to the table at Ibrox.
The former lawyer will be looking to help make Rangers a force to reckon with in Scotland and Europe again, and he has a huge job on his hands.
The Light Blues have started 2024-25 disappointingly under manager Philippe Clement, with 11 points separating them from league leaders Celtic and eight points between them and second-placed Aberdeen.
The Rangers boss is under pressure following the underwhelming campaign they are currently having, and he could be sacked before January if nothing has improved.
