The powers that be at La Liga giants Real Madrid are now giving fresh consideration to dipping into the transfer market for reinforcements this January.

This comes amid mounting concern over the lack of progress being made by sidelined defender David Alaba in his recovery.

Stopper Alaba, for his part, has of course been confined to the sidelines since December of last year.

As much comes after the Austrian international became the third member of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad in the space of mere months to suffer a torn ACL.

Alaba, in turn, went under the knife to repair the problem, with the aim of linking back up with his teammates in Madrid early this season.

The initial hope was that the former Bayern Munich man would be fit and available to feature in a competitive setting by October, this month.

This, however, has since proven to be far from the case.

After it was recently suggested that a new target date of January had been set, ensuing word in the media on Monday paints an altogether more alarming picture of things.

As per a report from journalist Edu Pidal of Onda Cero, Alaba remains in serious pain when running and taking part in physical activities.

This comes with the cartilage in his knee now so worn that the bones are rubbing together when put under stress.

So serious has the situation become, that the Real Madrid medical staff are no longer sure that Alaba will return to the pitch at all, at any point down the line.

With Dani Carvajal sidelined long-term, too, Real Madrid, in turn, ‘are already looking for a defender for the winter market’.
