Tottenham Hotspur lost the second leg of their crucial EFL Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool 4-0. Despite holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Spurs would throw it all away in a gutless second-half showing.
Tottenham went into the half-time break only one goal down. Spurs were expected to hold on for dear life, but they could not find the resolve.
New Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky brought Darwin Nunez down for a penalty which Mohamed Salah converted to turn the tie around. Conor Bradley and Dominik Szoboszlai ripped the Tottenham defence apart to add the third.
Tottenham stood and watched Virgil Van Dijk ghost into the box to score the fourth and complete the rout, leaving Spurs with nothing but regret as they went out without a fight.
Only a few players in the Spurs team can leave that pitch with their heads held high after that atrocious performance.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp singled Tottenham defender Djed Spence for praise despite the loss. The 24-year-old put in a shift at both left-back and right-back while steaming into midfield to help make up the numbers in the centre of the park.
“Djed Spence played 14 different positions tonight. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Redknapp said (via the BBC).
Football London also hailed Spence’s performance, saying, “Looked the most fearless for Spurs and was switched to the right wing in the second half before coming back to left-back late on.”
Spence won eight of his 14 duels and completed four of his five attempted dribbles. He was constantly looking to get forward, especially when he moved to the right flank, where he was more comfortable.
Failing to record a shot on target in the second half of a season-defining game is atrocious.
The club’s failings this season have been blamed on injuries, and that is true to a large extent, but this was a hapless showing from Spurs. Liverpool wanted it more.
Tottenham weren’t good with the ball and weren’t quick enough without it. They allowed Liverpool into the game and made the job easier for the Reds. Spurs are diabolical in big games, and yesterday was another example.
