Over the weekend thirty-six League One and Championship teams squared off for the first round of head-to-head fixtures in the 2nd annual Jägermeister Cup. Here’s how things transpired, by the numbers.
A loanee from New England Revolution, Panayotou made his Hartford debut against regional rival Portland Hearts of Pine. He did not disappoint, scoring in the 41st minute off a fast-break. He added a second in the 64th minute, equally Hartford’s total goal tally in the league so far. He then drew red card in the 72nd minute under some of the most bizarre circumstances. He was being substituted off, and instead of exiting at the nearest touch line, trotted back to the halfway line. Referee Ricardo Montero took exception to this and brandished a yellow for time-wasting. But since he was already on a yellow, that got upgraded to red. In any event, it was quite a memorable start for the 20-year old.
After suffering a tough loss in a penalty shootout last week to Tampa Bay, Naples played host to another Championship side: Charleston Battery. The Battery had not lost to a lower tier side since 4/7/22. They had scored in every fixture in 2025 until today. But Naples came out hot; in the first half five of their seven shots were on frame. Although only one went in, they had put Charleston on the back foot. Naples just managed to hold to the Battery’s furious second half onslaught to win 1 – 0.
Louisville City, Indy Eleven and Rhode Island all put up four goals in their matches; and four penalties in the shootout was enough to secure One Knoxville two points over FC Tulsa.
For the Anchors, there was a palpable feeling of “about time.” Scoring (outside of the Roots match) has been an issue for them, and they’ll want to carry this offensive momentum into next weekend when they make their home debut against San Antonio FC at the brand-new Centreville Bank Stadium.
There were a number of last minute bangers that sealed the deal.
