As per VoetbalPrimeur, Luuk de Jong is on Fiorentina’s radar. This news was initially reported by several Italian media outlets, including Corriere dello Sport and Tuttomercatoweb. The Serie A club sees the 34-year-old free agent striker as a serious candidate as back-up to Moise Kean.
De Jong’s profile is well-known. The striker is a free agent after his contract with PSV expired early last month. De Jong could have extended his contract for a year in his beloved Eindhoven, but he preferred to sign a two-year extension. An agreement failed to materialise, and PSV switched focus to Alassane Pléa. A De Jong return seems less likely by the day.
Saudi Arabia’s Al Ettifaq were recently mentioned as a potential new club for De Jong, but that news was quickly debunked. Now, Corriere dello Sport and Tuttomercatoweb are reporting that the Dutchman is being considered by Fiorentina.
“He’s being closely monitored,” reports suggest. Should De Jong go to Florence, he will essentially be brought in as a rotation player. Whether the former Dutch international is open to that is unknown.
Incidentally, De Jong isn’t the only striker being considered by Fiorentina. La Viola are also looking at Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is a free agent after leaving Everton. Interestingly, De Jong was also considered by Fiorentina in early 2012, when he was still playing for FC Twente. At that time, the striker wasn’t keen on a move to Italy.
