Alexander Isak has spoken publicly for the first time about his stand-off with Newcastle United, declaring that his relationship with the club “can’t continue” and insisting that change is “in the best interests of everyone.”
His words, released in a lengthy Instagram statement, mark a significant escalation in what has already become one of the summer’s most dramatic transfer sagas.
Isak, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, accused Newcastle of failing to honour promises made to him about his future.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” he said. “That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.”
His frustration was underlined by his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, where he had been nominated for Player of the Year. Instead, he chose the occasion to make his dissatisfaction known, adding: “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”
The club moved quickly to respond, releasing a statement stressing their determination to keep their £150m-rated striker.
“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views,” Newcastle said. “As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.”
Despite Liverpool’s rejected £110m plus add-ons bid earlier this month, Newcastle remain unmoved, insisting that Isak is still central to their plans.
The timing could hardly be worse for Eddie Howe’s side. With Callum Wilson gone and no new striker signed, Newcastle’s attacking options look dangerously thin. Failed pursuits of Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko leave only 22-year-old William Osula as cover — a forward who has yet to start a Premier League game.
Isak’s desire to leave is clear, but with just under two weeks left of the transfer window, Newcastle’s stance may ultimately decide whether he remains on Tyneside or makes the switch to Merseyside.
