Liverpool’s summer transfer business has reached a critical phase. With Athletic Club visiting Anfield and the window edging towards its conclusion, the pursuit of Alexander Isak could define not only the remainder of this summer, but the club’s direction for years to come.
Liverpool’s £110 million bid for Alexander Isak was a message of ambition. While Newcastle United publicly rejected it, the intention was never to close a deal at the first attempt. It was about establishing intent and letting Isak know the interest is real.
Newcastle’s reluctance to sell centres around replacing the Swedish striker. Players like Šeško, Watkins and Jackson have been considered, but no deal is close. With Isak training away from the squad and rejecting a new contract, a clean departure now looks more realistic than reintegration.
Liverpool are expected to return with an improved offer. One closer to £125 million, potentially rising to £135 million with add-ons, would likely get it done. If not, a January deal may be explored.
Darwin Núñez has reached a crossroads. Despite flashes of potential, his inconsistency has become an issue. Al Hilal have identified him as their top target, and although Milan are also interested, they cannot compete financially.
Liverpool are open to letting Núñez go. With Ekitiké signed and Isak potentially joining, a new-look front line is emerging, one built around control and technical fluency. Núñez, for all his effort, may not suit the new approach under Arne Slot.
This window is not a rebuild, but a sharp evolution. Florian Wirtz, Frimpong, Kerkez and Ekitiké have all arrived. Harvey Elliott may depart. One more addition, likely defensive, is expected. Liverpool are not tinkering, they are transitioning with purpose.
If Isak joins, he will symbolise a new era. If not, alternatives will be considered quickly. Either way, Liverpool are setting the tone for their next great side.
