The Serie A title race is still wide open with Napoli, Inter, and Atalanta all in the thick of it, and Lazio, Juventus, and Fiorentina are still technically in with a mathematical chance.

Despite leading the pack, Napoli’s top-scorer is Romelu Lukaku who has netted nine times. Atalanta’s prolific Argentinian-born forward Mateo Retegui has scored 21 league goals this season.

Online sports betting expert Darren Moore explains that the best online sportsbooks offer consumers the opportunity to explore betting on the best European football markets including the Serie A top scorer. With Retegui so far ahead, bookmakers are not offering much value (current odds are around 1/8, with the nearest contender being Moise Kean at 7/1), but bets can be enhanced by the enticing deals on offer.

Retegui’s form has seen him average 1.36 goals per 90 minutes for Atalanta who he joined from fellow Serie A club Genoa for just under €30 million. His impact in his first season with the club has seen interest from the from the English Premier League with Manchester United and Arsenal both said to be interested.

A release clause of €50 million could prove to be value for money for Europe’s top clubs that are interested in the Italian international.

Atalanta’s attacking football has been rewarded with Ademola Lookman sitting in fourth place in the top-scorer chart with 12 goals. His five assists also have the ex-Everton forward as joint-fifth in the league. Incredibly, along with Lookman and Lukaku, another ex-Everton forward has been performing well in the Italian top flight.

Moise Keane sits second behind Retegui on 15 goals, a great return for the player who could only manage two in 32 appearances for Everton.

A disappointing move to Juventus after impressing on loan led to Fiorentina taking a chance on the striker, and 15 goals in 22 appearances have seen his value rise and teams including Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested.

France international and son of legendary defender Lillian Thuram, Marcus Thuram is the Serie A third top scorer with 13 goals in 24 games. Thuram has managed 29 goals and 21 assists in 78 appearances for the club, helping them to the Serie A title last season.

Retegui is on track to surpass last season’s Capocannoniere award (Paolo Rossi Award) winner Lautaro Marinez of Inter who notched 24 times in their title winnings season. However, he is unlikely to match or beat the league’s record of 36 goals which was achieved in the 1928/29 season by Torino’s Gino Rossetti, Gonzalo Higuain in 2015/16 for Napoli, and Lazio’s Ciro Immobile in 2019/20.

Retegui’s 20 goals and 1.36 strike rate are easily the best in the league, and he also has the highest goal conversion rate of 31%. Atalanta’s ability to hold on to the in-form striker over the January transfer window is an important part of their continued league title challenge.

While Napoli are ahead, Inter have a game in hand, giving both teams an advantage over Atalanta. However, having two in-form goal-scorers in a defensive league could count for more at the end of the season.
