FLW spoke with their Ipswich Town Fan Pundit who identified his ideal replacement for Kieran Mckenna
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
With Thomas Frank emerging as Tottenham Hotspur's number one choice to replace the recently sacked Ange Postecoglu, Brentford have reportedly set their sights on Ipswich Town's Kieran Mckenna as the ideal successor.
The managerial merry-go-round has perhaps left Ipswich contemplating life after their promotion-winning boss - who guided the Tractor Boys to back-to-back promotions before their relagation from the Premier League last season.
FLW spoke with our Ipswich Town Fan Pundit, Adam Wilkin, who identified his ideal replacement for McKenna - should the Northern Irishman depart Portman Road for Brentford this summer.
Speaking about potential replacements for McKenna, Wilkin thinks the Ipswich hierarchy would target a similar profile of manager.
"If MckLenna were to move on, I think Mark Ashton and the board would be looking for a similar sort of profile, young, up-and-coming coaches, potentially with a bit of experience," Wilkin told FLW.
"My top three would probably be Michael Carrick - because of the similarity and the style of play, could mean that it's a more seamless transition. He worked with McKenna so has similar sort of methods when Middlesbrough and Ipswich played each other."
Prior to his sacking, the former Manchester United midfielder had overseen one play-off campaign and taken Middlesbrough to an EFL Cup semi-final.
Wilkin's second choice is Anthony Barry - currently England's assistant head coach under Thomas Tuchel.
"I also like Anthony Barry, who is know assistant head coach to Thomas Tuchel at England, so that might put a spanner in the works there because that’s only a recent thing but I believe he was interviewed before McKenna got the job and did well, I think it was probably between him and Mckenna at the end, I believe."
Barry's appointment with England may complicate any potential move - but his previous experience working with top-level managers like Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern Munich certainly adds appeal.
Wilkin saved his highest praise for Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl. He said, "But my top choice ahead of those two would be Danny Rohl who is linked with the majority of the Championship at the moment given the situation Sheffield Wednesday are in.
"He’s done an incredible job there considering the state they were in, in terms of transfers and the squad when he took over in the relegation zone and he turned them into a - well he kept them up and then turned them into a very competitive outfit last year.
"Similar to McKenna he’s another young coach, he’s still only 36, but has already proved he’s equipped to handle the Championship and i think his style of play would suit another promotion push."
If the reports of the manager switches come to fruition, the focus for Ipswich would be to ensure any potential replacement can continue the upwards trajectory McKenna has set them on - this list definitely includes young coaches who are ambitious enough to try and deliver another promotion push next season.
