Inter manager Simone Inzaghi has a huge void to fill in the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana final against bitter rivals Milan. Marcus Thuram picked up a muscle injury in a 2-0 semifinal win against Atalanta last Thursday.
Therefore, the Frenchman will likely sit out Monday’s showpiece in Riyadh. According toCalciomercato, Joaquin Correa has suddenly emerged as the frontrunner to take the 27-year-old’s place in the starting XI alongside the underperforming Lautaro Martinez.
Despite Thuram’s overwhelming desire to play, the Inter medical team has strongly advised Inzaghi against risking his talismanic forward. The ex-Borussia Monchengladbach star has been the focal point of Inter’s attack this season, netting a club-high 12 goals in Serie A.
Replacing him won’t be a small feat. But Inzaghi must make a decision. Mehdi Taremi has failed to find his footing at Inter since joining the club on a Bosman deal in the summer, netting just once in 20 appearances across all competitions.
As such, Inzaghi has his doubts. Meanwhile, Marko Arnautovic could leave Inter in January after falling out of favor with the Scudetto-winning manager. It leaves Correa as the only remaining alternative in the final third.
Correa’s style is similar to Thuram’s, but he has barely featured for Inter this season. Despite tallying two goals and one assist in his only league start against Hellas Verona, the 30-year-old has been on the fringes, collecting just 148 minutes of top-flight action.
Inzaghi isn’t afraid of making bold decisions. Yet, this one could determine history as Inter could become the first team to win four consecutive Supercoppa Italiana titles.
