Inter sealed a place in the Champions League quarter-finals with an intense 2-1 home victory against Feyenoord. Simone Inzaghi’s side had set one foot in the last eight with a 2-0 first-leg win in Rotterdam, but the job was only half done before tonight.
Like at De Kuip, Marcus Thuram opened the scoring in the first half. However, tonight’s goal was special as he danced past several Feyenoord defenders before hammering the ball into the top corner. Yet, the Nerazzurri failed to defend their slender lead before halftime.
Defensive stalwart Francesco Acerbi conceded a cheap penalty toward the end of the first half. Jakub Moder made no mistake from the spot, handing Robin Van Persie’s side a fighting chance in the second half. But Feyenoord’s dream of a comeback vanished only five minutes after the break.
Mehdi Taremi went down inside the Dutch side’s penalty area, with Hakan Calhanoglu converting the resulting penalty to put the final nail in Feyenoord’s coffin. Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter player ratings.
Yann Sommer – 6.5
Back between the sticks after thumb surgery, the Swiss veteran showed no signs of rustiness as he pulled off several decent saves but couldn’t stop Moder’s penalty.
Yann Bisseck – 7
Swooped in for Alessandro Bastoni on the left, the German defender enjoyed a near-spotless game, making numerous crucial interceptions and blocks.
Francesco Acerbi – 6
A player of his quality and experience should’ve known better than conceding a cheap penalty that could’ve changed the course of this tie.
Benjamin Pavard – 6.5
Following a dismal performance against Monza, the Frenchman returned to his usual best, living up to the task both defensively and offensively.
Denzel Dumfries – 7
It feels like he can never run out of steam. The Dutch wingback was omnipresent in attack while proving nearly unbeatable at the back.
Davide Frattesi – 6.5
Inter fans may have expected more from Nicolo Barella’s heir, but a lack of regular first-team football took its toll as the Italian midfielder delivered a mediocre showing.
Hakan Calhanoglu – 6.5
Feyenoord may not have gotten the penalty had he been more cautious when Acerbi committed a silly foul inside the box. However, he atoned with a well-taken penalty.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 7
The Armenian was the driving force in Inter’s midfield this evening, completing numerous forward runs while never giving away possession.
Carlos Augusto – 7.5
Inzaghi can be proud of the Brazilian’s showing, as the ex-Monza star was nearly unplayable on the left, causing Feyenoord’s defense all kinds of trouble.
Marcus Thuram – 7.5
The goal was a piece of art, showcasing just how talismanic the French superstar can be when fit and firing. He almost doubled his tally early in the second half, but his thunderous shot flew just over the bar.
Mehdi Taremi – 6.5
Despite drawing another blank in the Inter shirt, the Iranian striker drew a crucial penalty to kill off this tie. His work ethic was commendable.
Kristjan Asllani – 6
Alessandro Bastoni – 6.5
Marko Arnautovic – 6
