Napoli and the entourage of Alex Meret have been negotiating an extension for a while, but they haven’t been able to reach an agreement yet, and Inter are keeping tabs on the situation ahead of a possible attempt to sign him on a free, Radio Kiss Kiss informed.
The 27-year-old is under contract only until June. He has proceeded with short-term deals and automatic renewals during his time in Campania. He has racked up 187 appearances over the years, conceding 209 goals and keeping 61 clean sheets.
Napoli are trying to add at least another year to the contract of Meret, but the talks haven’t been successful, and Inter are waiting in the wings. The goalkeeper makes €2M net.
The Nerazzurri addressed the position last summer, signing Josep Martinez from Genoa for €15M. However, he has yet to play a single minute since he hasn’t been able to concretely challenge Yann Sommer yet. The Swiss talisman is 35, and signing a new shot-stopper would signal a changing of the guard at the position.
It’s unclear why the Partenopei have never fully committed to their starter, who might not be a world-beater, but he’s reliable and pretty cheap salary-wise. They should consider a January sale if there’s no progress in the next month.
The Nerazzurri can never be discounted when it comes to Bosman signings despite the latest rumors, as he’s young-ish for the role and his wages are affordable. On the other hand, it makes very little sense for them to acquire another starting-caliber player at the position, as their investment in Martinez would go to waste that way.
