Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi feels that there’s little truth to the assertion by AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale about the Nerazzurri going “bankrupt.”

The former Nerazzurri captain and 1982 World Cup winner hit back on Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. He noted that Inter won plenty of titles between two separate Serie A title wins.

Yesterday, remarks came out from Milan owner Gerry Cardinale taking aim at Inter.

The Rossoneri owner was speaking about his strategy for running his club as a sustainable business.

Cardinale stated that Inter had gone “bankrupt” after winning the Serie A title last season.

That is certainly not true as the Nerazzurri did not “go bankrupt” as a club. However, Cardinale was presumably referring to the fact that Suning defaulted on their debt.

The previous Inter owners had tried to hold onto control of the club.

However, Suning’s own financial situation eventually made it impossible for them to stay on. Control of the club passed into the hands of Oaktree Capital after Suning failed to repay what they owed.

Bergomi argued that Cardinale’s remarks “didn’t refer to Inter.”

“Inter have always been in the fight for the Scudetto,” the former Nerazzurri defender.

“And then they won another.”

“In between them, they won five cup titles and reached the Champions League final.”

Therefore, in the view of Bergomi, Inter’s financial situation hardly harmed their competitiveness in recent seasons.

It is certainly true that the Nerazzurri dealt with some massive financial problems in recent years. Particularly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the assertion of “bankruptcy” remains quite a strange one.

Moreover, it is also true that Inter’s financial situation has improved season on season after the rock bottom of 2021.
