Simone Inzaghi is toying with a 3-4-1-2 formation at Inter Milan as he aims to see the team’s tactical approach evolve next season.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

By now, certain aspects of Inzaghi’s tactical approach are very familiar in Serie A.

The coach virtually always sets his team up with a back three. And then, there are two-way wingbacks who at times do the job of both wingers and fullbacks.

And Inzaghi has virtually always gone with two strikers.

The coach can vary the precise dynamic of the attacking duo based on the profiles of the forwards he has at his disposal.

This can be seen in the way that Inzaghi has used forwards like Edin Dzeko, Romelu Lukaku, and Alexis Sanchez in different roles at Inter.

But the principle of having two out-and-out attacking players virtually always remains the same.

That leaves three midfielders.

Last season, the Nerazzurri’s central trio had a fairly conventional balance. Hakan Calhanoglu anchored the midfield, whilst both Nicolo Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had box-to-box roles.

But that midfield balance is something Inzaghi could change next season.

One of Inzaghi’s priorities in preseason training will be to work to keep the tactical system from getting stale.

The 48-year-old’s 3-5-2 system was never predictable last season. Inter always seemed to be one step ahead of the opposition despite the lineup being well-worn on paper.

But if Inzaghi doesn’t keep adding new ideas, it could become too easy for other coaches to find solutions.

And one possibility that Inzaghi could use would be a 3-4-1-2 formation.

As Tuttosport note, that is a system that the coach used at Lazio at times.

Inter have midfielders capable of joining Calhanoglu in a double pivot.

The question then becomes who would be the attacking midfielder – the “1” in the 3-4-1-2.

Last season, Alexis Sanchez occasionally played in that role. But the Chilean is out the door.

That is part of why Inter are going after Albert Gudmundsson, reports Tuttosport. The Icelander has exactly the versatility to switch between midfield and attack, as he showed at Genoa.

Meanwhile, young attacking midfielder Valentin Carboni could represent another solution.
