Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi admits that losing to AC Milan in the derby is “a defeat that burns.”

Inzaghi spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the 2-1 Serie A loss against their city rivals.

Inter had yet to lose a match going into this evening’s derby clash with Milan.

The Nerazzurri had drawn with Genoa and Monza in Serie A, and beaten Lecce and Atalanta.

Meanwhile, Inter had taken a point away from their Champions League opener against Manchester City during the week.

And the recent history in the derby suggested that Inter would be the favourites in the derby.

The Nerazzurri had won each of the previous six meetings with their city rivals.

However, the derby has a reputation for a fixture where the form book gets ripped up. And that is exactly what happened this evening.

Inter looked little like the team that has had Milan’s number in recent years. They were miles off of their performance against City in midweek.

The Rossoneri, on the other hand, greatly improved from their poor showing against Liverpool on Tuesday.

That result was a deserved victory for Milan.

And a result that will send Inter coach Inzaghi back to the drawing board.

“The sense I got was that we were not quite in the game mentally,” Inzaghi said after this evening’s match.

“We need to do better at these things.”

“Defeats always burn,” Inzaghi said. “Especially in the derby.”

“We’ll try to work harder and take something positive from a painful defeat.”

Inzaghi continued that “We started both halves badly.”

“Then Barella had a bit of a physical problem,” the Inter coach noted.

“But I made the substitutions because in the first quarter of an hour of the second half little had changed for us,” Inzaghi said.

“We gave the impression of not being a team like we normally are,” he continued.

“It’ll be a question of analysis to understand where we could have done more.”

“With me as coach being the first to have to answer for it,” Inzaghi said.

And asked whether he thinks Milan can be a Serie A title rival for Inter, the Nerazzurri coach replied “Definitely, yes.”

“Tonight they were better than us and deserved the win,” he went on.

“I tried to make changes, but the situation didn’t change.”
