Scudetto challengers Inter extended their undefeated run with a comfortable 3-0 away win over mid-table outfit Empoli.
Scorers: Frattesi 50′, 67′, Martínez 79′
Proud owners of the most goals in the opening 15 minutes of action in Serie A this season, Inter would have wanted to take full control of proceedings in the opening exchanges. However, despite early possession dominance, the Nerazzurri were unable to press home that advantage.
The Black and Blues thought they had finally pulled ahead in the 19th minute through Matteo Darmian, but VAR pulled the goal back after confirming a handball in the immediate build-up.
Inter would gain a massive advantage on the night in the 32nd minute when Georgian international Saba Goglichidze received his marching orders after going in high and studs-up on Marcus Thuram.
Simone Inzaghi’s troops would have to wait until the second half to break the deadlock through Davide Frattesi’s 50th-minute opener.
Frattesi, who has been in prolific form for the national team, did well to control Darmian’s ball back into the box at the end line before his goal-bound effort deflected off Mattia Viti and past Empoli shot-stopper Devis Vásquez.
A quick-reaction save from Vásquez temporarily kept the deficit at one when the Colombian denied Lautaro Martínez from close range as the Nerazzuri continued to knock on the doorstep.
It would be to no avail, however, as Inter would not be denied a second when Frattesi completed his brace less than a minute later after Martínez’s one-touch flick found the Italian midfielder free and clear to put the match to bed.
Martínez would finally get in on the goal action himself in the 79th minute to extend Inter’s lead on the night with a composed finish past Vásquez, putting him on five goals in the early months of the 2024-25 season. With that, the Argentine became the highest-scoring foreign player in Inter’s illustrious history.
This result sees Inter climb back within four points of pace-setters Napoli, while Empoli would end the night still sitting in 11th.
