Inter insist that they haven’t received a real offer from Galatasaray for Hakan Calhanoglu and that his departure isn’t imminent despite several hints in that direction. The midfielder has only fueled the buzz during a trip to Istanbul for the wedding of his compatriot Cenk Ozkaçar.
According to the Turkish publication Sabah (via Mediaset), the star asked to be let go and not to obstruct the move to the team he supports. Instead, the Nerazzurri have set €35/40M price tag, which the suitors can’t match, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
Lautaro Martinez took a shot at Calhanoglu after their FIFA Club World Cup elimination to DAZN (via SOSFanta).
“Who doesn’t want to stay here should go. That’s the first thing. We have brought Inter back where it belongs and will have to keep it there.”
The Turk answered via Instagram. Giuseppe Marotta weighed in too.
“His remarks were moving and meaningful. He’s the captain and demands commitment. I’ve always said that if a player wants to leave, the door is wide open. He didn’t say it, but he was referring to Calhanoglu. However, we don’t have to crucify him. We’ll talk with him. As of now, there aren’t the premises to part ways, but we’ll do it without any problem if we get to that point.”
It got ugly pretty quickly, which isn’t a new thing for the Nerazzurri when something they didn’t expect is in motion. It’s shaping up to be a war of attrition, but, despite his pivotal role and quality, they can’t expect much of a haul for a player over that 30 they got for free. His exit looks more likely than a reconciliation.
