Inter Milan and Barcelona have just played out one of the all-time greatest Champions League games in this season’s semi-final.
The two teams went blow for blow in breathless fashion for two whole games and then some, with extra time needed to decide a winner.
Ultimately, it will be the Italian outfit heading to this year’s final in Munich after coming out the right side of a seven-goal thriller at the San Siro, winning 7-6 on aggregate.
Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal with a wonderfully placed finish in the 99th minute, breaking Barça hearts just like Jose Mourinho’s side famously did in 2010.
It was the 13th and final goal in this frenetic contest, something that has only been done once before. Inter and Barcelona now share the record for most goals in a Champions League semi-final with Liverpool and AS Roma, which was also 7-6 over two legs in 2017/18.
Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring in the 21st minute, tapping in from close range after being set up perfectly by Denzel Dumfries, who was arguably the star player of the semi-finals.
The Argentinian striker has now scored 21 goals in all competitions this season, with nine of them coming in Europe. That now makes him the joint-top goal scorer for Inter in a single Champions League campaign, level with legendary centre-forward Hernan Crespo. He will undoubtedly be hoping to go one better in the final against either Arsenal or PSG.
Hakan Calhanoglu doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime, converting from the penalty spot after Cubarsi fouled Martinez in the box. It was only the fifth time all season Barcelona have conceded twice in the first half of a game – and two of those have come against Inter.
Just as in the first leg, the Catalan club fought back to get themselves in the lead. It was Raphinha who grabbed the third for the visitors late on following goals from Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo.
Although it won’t be much consolation to the Brazilian, Raphinha did equal one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s coveted Champions League records. The goal was his 21st goal involvement (13 goals, eight assists) in the competition this season, the most in a single Champions League campaign since Ronaldo reached that number in 2013/14.
