Former Premier League forward Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Liam Delap to become the number one striker at Chelsea.

The Blues made Delap their first summer signing in a deal worth £30m from Ipswich, and he’s quietly impressed at the Club World Cup.

The 22-year-old grabbed an assist on his debut against LAFC, before scoring his first Chelsea goal in the 3-0 win against ES Tunis on Tuesday.

Agbonlahor backs Delap to become Chelsea’s number one striker

Chelsea paid the price at times last season for the lack of an alternative to Nicolas Jackson, but they moved quickly to bring Delap in.

Delap has added a much needed different dimension to Chelsea’s attack and has looked a real handful for opposition defenders.

With Nicolas Jackson suspended following his red card against Flamengo, Delap has been handed an opportunity to make himself first choice striker.

The England under-21 international will once again lead the line against Benfica on Saturday night, and Agbonlahor has backed him to become Chelsea’s first choice striker.

“He’s going to score goals, I’ll guarantee you that,” he told talkSPORT as cited on X.com.

“He’s not here to be a bit part player. He’s at Chelsea to be the number one striker, and I really think he will.”

Delap seems to be forming a partnership with Enzo Fernandez, and the pair have already assisted one another.

There’s a long way to go, but early evidence is showing Delap looks like a shrewd piece of business and could turn out to be an absolute bargain.

Jackson faces uncertain future

The signing of Delap raised questions about the future of Jackson, and those questions have gone into overdrive following his sending off against Flamengo.

The red card was Jackson’s second in his last five games, and it’s believed he’s attracting interest from Juventus and Napoli.

It’s been reported Chelsea want more than £50m for Jackson, but the Blues aren’t actively looking to sell the 24-year-old.
